From authentic arts and crafts and artisan food that will have you returning for more to perfectly functional electrical goods that are about a quarter of the price than in the store and handcrafted gifts made by charismatic entrepreneurs; you can expect to find everything and anything amidst the hustle and bustle of Cape Town's marketplaces.
Cape Town’s history in arts and culture is layered and has many stories to tell. It is made up of both light and dark passages which lends itself to an artistic and cultural scene of great depth and creativity. The mix of cultures and people in the Mother City has created an eclectic and exciting tapestry of art, design, theatre and music.
Clifton Beaches
The four Clifton beaches in Cape Town are regarded as being among the most beautiful in the world. The white sands and blue waters have been the subject of countless travel photos over the years. During South Africa’s summer months, the four Clifton beaches in Cape Town attract sun-lovers from all corners of the globe. It is the ideal location for sunbathing, beach sports, people-watching and relaxing. From these beautiful beaches, patrons can gaze out across the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean and up to the majestic mountain peaks such as Lion's Head and the 12 Apostles that tower above Camps Bay. Because of Cape Town’s extended daylight hours in summer, you can tan as late as 18h30, while it only gets dark much later.
Camps Bay Beach
Palm-fringed, with platinum blonde sands (and bathers to match), Camps Bay beach is where the well-to-do and the famous congregate to see, and be seen. This Cape Town beach is all about being gorgeous, from its manicured shoreline overlooked by millionaires’ mansion, to dazzling sunsets and minimalist swimwear. If hours of sun and thong watching have raised your temperature, cool off in the natural tidal pool, or head for one of the stylish sun-downer venues overlooking the bay.
From leisurely rambles to invigorating hikes, Cape Town has something for everyone.
Whether you’re after a windswept coastal wander, a mountainous hike with spectacular views, or a leisurely amble through one of the Cape’s lush nature reserves, Cape Town offers it all!
Important note: Although the Cape is rich in natural beauty, tourists and locals are urged to take necessary precautions when exploring secluded areas, as crimes and accidents do happen.
Those venturing into the Table Mountain National Park should have the following emergency numbers on hand: 086 110 6417/ 107 or 021 480 7700. Criminal incidents should be reported to the nearest police station as soon as able.
We also recommend @safetymountain as a useful resource for hikers. This free safety tracking service allows you to notify local trackers of your contact details, intended route and travel time via whatsapp. You are then able to provide hourly updates on your progress, and to notify trackers when you are safely off the mountain.
It helps to have a map, and for that, SANParks and The Inside Guide recommends Slingsby Maps as an essential resource for hiking enthusiasts. Detailed maps of some of the Cape’s best hiking trails are available, including the Pipe Track, Cape Point and the Cederberg. Contact Slingsby Maps at 021 788 4545 for more information.
The waterfront is named after Prince Alfred, who began construction on the harbor in 1860, and his mother Queen Victoria. The V&A Waterfront encompasses 22 landmarks, including the Chavonnes Battery Museum, which dates back to 1725 and is the harbor's oldest heritage site. You can opt to do a self-guided walking historical tour, which starts at the Information Center, or you can take the 90-minute guided tour that departs daily from the Chavonnes Battery Museum at 11h00 and 14h00
V&A Waterfront is divided up into five shopping districts: Victoria Wharf, the Watershed, The Alfred Mall and Pierhead, The Clock Tower, and Breakwater Point. With more than 450 stores, you’ll find everything from local designers to big international brands. For crafts and local talent, make sure you pop into the Watershed, and, if it’s art or jewelry you’re after, head over to The Alfred Mall and Pierhead.
